Back to the Drawing Board: Black Label Krill Oil Discontinued

heart health

NOOOOOOO! Say it isn’t so!!

But alas, it is. Despite the temper tantrum we pitched (can you believe it had NO effect at all??) the manufacturer of Black Label Krill Oil has discontinued manufacturing it.

Across the internet, supplies of Black Label are rapidly dwindling. If you love this product, get it now while you still can. Prices are already going up as supply runs out.

Meanwhile, we have to decide what to recommend in its place. Back to the drawing board.

Unfortunately we just haven’t been able to find another product with a similar formula. So instead we’ve gone in another direction. Krill Oil all by itself is a wonderful thing. Just the way Nature created it. So why not recommend a product that’s pure and unadulterated?

While we’re at it, lets find a product that’s as fresh as possible, and one that isn’t overpriced. It was actually a tall order. But we have succeeded!

Captains Krill Oil is a tiny company just like us. In fact, the entire operation happens on ship. Captains ships are fitted with small manufacturing facilities – facilities fully inspected and registered by the proper authorities – so that the product is harvested, extracted, encapsulated and bottled all within hours.

Then it’s sold directly to select retailers – skipping a couple layers of distribution “middle men” that add several dollars to the final price of each bottle. So this krill oil is actually a good bit lower in cost than any we’ve recommended before.

Omega-3 And Prostate Cancer: The Truth

bad scientist

The media was all in a titter this week over a new study that purported to show a link between Omega-3 consumption and an increased risk of prostate cancer.

But as more details emerged, it became clear that the conclusions of the study were highly flawed, contradicted a raft of previous evidence, and amounted to what many experts called, “scaremongering.”

No sooner had the study been publicized than dozens of experts began crying foul:

– Dr. Michele Sadler, scientific adviser to the Health Food Manufacturers’ Association (HEMA) pointed out that the study wasn’t designed to investigate the role of Omega-3 in prostate cancer and therefore, “no firm conclusions can be drawn.”

“This type of evidence does not demonstrate cause and effect,” she said.

– Experts from GOED (Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s) pointed out that if the findings of this study were true, “then prostate cancer would be rampant in any country with high seafood consumption (Scandinavia, Japan, etc). But clearly this is not the case.”

-Duffy MacKay, vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs at the Council for Responsible Nutrition pointed out that this wasn’t the only “significant correlation” from the study that didn’t make sense when put against the background of scientific evidence. According to him, the data also showed non smokers and non drinkers were also at a higher risk.

“If you listen to this study,” MacKay said, “you should not only cut omega-3 but you should start smoking cigarettes and drinking more.”

Prior Weight Of Evidence Disputes Current “Findings”

It takes mere seconds for a Google Scholar search to turn up pages of results contradicting the current findings. Just a few to have a look at include:

Conclusion: Not Time To Freak Out

Once again the media and biased researchers have come together to try and frighten you about health risks that don’t exist. To the contrary, the evidence shows you’re not only safe, but well advised to keep taking your Omega-3 supplements!

Of course, we stand behind what we think is the best Omega-3 supplement out there: Black Label Krill Oil™. Get yours today at one of these great websites:

Study Shows Krill Oil Offers Protection From Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative Colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affects the lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum.

It’s an often-painful disease that affects an estimated 1-2 million Americans with symptoms such as abdominal cramping, frequent diarrhea and blood or pus in stools. According to a just-published Scandinavian study, krill oil may be able to help.

Researchers divided 30 Wistar Rats into 3 groups: a control, an “induced colitis” group and an “induced colitis plus Krill Oil” group.

The krill oil group had better results in a whole battery of tests. The supplement “Significantly preserved” colon length, reduced oxidative markers and produced “consistent beneficial changes” across several indicators.

The researchers concluded, “These findings indicate an anti-inflammatory and a protein antioxidant effect of KO.”

Krill Oil hasn’t been tested in humans for ulcerative colitis, but considering all it’s other health benefits, it’s certainly worth a try for sufferers of this uncomfortable condition.

Omega-3 Lowers Inflammation In Study

heart health

Yet another study has confirmed Omega-3’s lower inflammation. But this study was also interesting for another reason.

Nearly 1400 Finnish men participated in the study which compared blood levels of Omega-3’s with levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a well-established marker of inflammation.

Not surprisingly, the study found that the higher the men’s levels of Omega-3, the lower the levels of CRP and therefore inflammation.

But here’s where the study gets interesting: The researchers broke the Omega-3’s down into specific compounds and analyzed levels of several different types of Omega-3’s. They compared EPA, DHA, DPA and ALA.

DHA had the strongest effect, followed by DPA (docosapentaenoic acid). In this particular study, EPA and ALA, both Omega-3’s that have been shown to provide benefits in other studies, did not significantly lower levels of inflammation.

The study authors discuss the results in terms of consumption of fish and fish oils, recommending both as means of lowering chronic inflammation. Yet even as they do, they demonstrate one of the major drawbacks of this recommendation right within the study.

Because as part of the same study, the same men gave hair samples to be tested for mercury levels. The researchers wanted to see if the mercury that can come from eating fish or taking fish oil supplements was pro-inflammatory and therefore negating the effects of the Omega-3’s.

(It wasn’t – higher levels of mercury did not correlate with higher levels of CRP. Isn’t that a relief?)

Of course, mercury isn’t an issue at all with krill oil supplements. And studies have shown that krill oil increases the level of EPA, DHA and DPA more effeciently than fish oil. (Same increases from lower amounts).

This is why we recommend Black Label Krill Oil™ as your best source of Omega-3’s.

Omega-3 and Vitamins Keep Brains Healthy

brain

Do we really have to give up bits of our cognitive functions to age? Apparently not. New research shows older adults with higher levels of certain nutrients in their blood performed better on measures of thinking abilities, and their brains had larger volumes.

“For people with a vitamin profile high in B, C, D, E, those particular nutrients seem to be working together on some level,” said lead study author Gene Bowman, an assistant professor in the department of neurology at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. “Having high scores for those vitamins was associated with better cognitive function and larger brain volume.”

Specifically, people with more of those nutrients performed better on tests of executive function and attention, and had better visuospatial skills and global cognitive function. They also had bigger brains.

Meanwhile, Omega-3 fatty acids were associated with better executive function and with fewer changes to the white matter of the brain.

“Executive function” is a term used to describe higher level thinking involving planning, attention and problem solving.

Conversely, those with high levels of trans fats in their blood not only performed worse on the cognitive tests, their brains were generally smaller. We all tend to lose a certain amount of brain size as we get older. But the more your brain shrinks, the more cognitive decline you’ll see.

Krill Oil Aids Heart Attack Recovery

heart health

Nobody wants to have a heart attack. But a new study suggests that if you do have one, you’ll recover better if you’ve been taking krill oil.

Rats in Norway were given krill oil supplementation for 14 days (a control group was fed normally) and then induced to have a myocardial Infarction. They were then continued on their respective diets, and reexamined in 7 more weeks.

The group that had krill oil saw much less overall damage long term than the control group. Specifically, their left ventricles were significantly less dialated, and other markers – such as heart weight, lung weight, inflammation, etc. were also significantly more positive in the krill oil group.

The researchers concluded that krill oil supplementation increased Omega-3 fatty acid levels in the heart tissue and this was responsible for the benefit.

Astaxanthin and Diabetes

workout

Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant that has been used extensively in Japan and other countries for eye fatigue, skin conditions, and muscle endurance, and it is gaining more of a following these days in the United States as well. We recently came across a remarkable animal study involving the antioxidant and diabetes. Scientists started treatment of Astaxanthin in this study on the subjects at 6 weeks of age. The effects of the antioxidant were evaluated at 10, 14, and 18 weeks.  In this study, Astaxanthin displayed very positive healing results, according to the scientists!

The Results Matter!

This study shows that Astaxanthins antioxidant powers,  reportedly  500 times stronger than vitamin E, have the ability to safeguard cells against the oxidative damage caused by high glucose levels. Blood sugar levels and oxidative stress are associated with complications common among diabetics, as well as kidney disease, nerve damage, and vision problems.

The non-fasting blood glucose level in the test subjects that weren’t given Astaxanthin was significantly higher than that of the ones that were treated with Astaxanthin. The results also indicated that Astaxanthin significantly increased levels in blood plasma, and lowered liver and kidney weights as well.  Glucose toxicity was reduced, and kidney cell function was preserved.

Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant that has been used for years in Japan and other countries for eye fatigue, skin conditions, and muscle endurance.  Studies have shown the antioxidant power of astaxanthin, which reportedly is 500 times stronger than that of vitamin E, can protect cells against the oxidative damage caused by high glucose (sugar) levels.  Additional studies will more than likely investigate astaxanthins potential to further benefit people at risk of diabetic complications like diabetic kidney disease.

What scientists are telling us is this: Those of us with high glucose level issues and diabetes should eat right, exercise, and supplement with Astaxanthin!  What’s the best way to get Astaxanthin, you ask?  It’s actually readily available in krill oil.   The phospholipids in Krill Oil make it more bioavailable than taking it alone.  Black Label Krill Oil™ has more Astaxanthin than any other on the market. So, to help take control of your health, you may want to give Astaxanthin a try.

Omega-3 May Lower Alzheimers Risk

HappySeniors

We have all heard of the countless benefits of consuming foods with omega-3, now you can add another big one: reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease. According to a new study  by Columbia University’s Dr. Nikolaos Scarmeas, consuming high levels of omega-3 fatty acids lower your levels of a protein called beta-amyloid which is a major player in developing memory problems and Alzheimer’s. In fact, higher levels of omega-3 each day can lower your blood beta-amyloid levels by as much as 20-30%!

Researchers have suspected a link between omega-3 and decreased memory loss risks for a long time, this study, which was recently published in Neurology, is a major breakthrough for doctors studying the development of Alzheimer’s. The study looked at over 1,200 people over the age of 65 and more than 10 different nutrients. Those with particularly high levels of omega-3 intake had 20-30% lower levels of beta-amyloid than people with an average intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

This study focused on the blood but more research remains to be done on how the levels of beta-amyloid in the blood actually affect the levels in the brain. Testing blood levels is a fairly simple thing for any researcher to do, testing brain levels is not – but it is a necessary step in figuring out exactly how much omega-3 fatty acids actually affect your chances of developing memory problems and Alzheimer’s.

Omega-3 fatty acids have long been considered highly beneficial for a bevy of physical elements. The acids have been shown to help prevent cancer, improve blood circulation, reduce the risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular problems, prevent inflammation, and improve neurological function. Unfortunately, most Americans don’t get the recommended amount from diet alone and certainly don’t come close to the high levels of omega-3 needed to lower your beta-amyloid levels. Even adding more fish and other omega-3 containing foods like eggs and nuts may not be enough which is why you may want to consider supplementing your diet with krill oil capsules for the best results.

Sugar Slows the Brain But Krill Oil Can Help

A new study by researchers at UCLA has found that diets high in sugar limit your brains memory and recall functions but similarly showed that the effects can be “off-set” by increasing the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet.

The study, performed by Dr. Fernando Gomez-Pinilla and published in the Journal of Physiology, focused on the effects of sugar and high-fructose sweetener on learning abilities in lab animals. After six weeks, the researchers found that the ones given high amounts of fructose had difficulty remembering and thinking clearly while trying to escape a maze they have been learning every day. Meanwhile, the ones given the high-fructose diet along with omega-3 fatty acids via flaxseed and DHA were able to recall what they had learned and escape the maze much quicker than their sugar-high counterparts.

What does this mean for you? For one, it is wise to stop eating so much sugar! Aside from the obvious effect on weight, high amounts of regular sugar and especially high-fructose syrup in your diet damage your brain and interfere with your ability to think clearly and coherently.

Omega-3 fatty acids have long shown to have multiple positive effects on the brain. Numerous studies on DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, have shown that the omega-3 rich compound protects the chemical connections in your brain that allow for efficient and clear learning and recall. This study further reaffirms how important it is to supplement your diet with omega-3s to help protect your brain and body’s basic functions.

Even with all of the research vehemently pushing people to increase their omega-3 fatty acid intake, most Americans don’t have nearly enough in their system to really make a dent. Even people who have increased their dietary intake of omega-3s through fish, seeds, or eggs may not be getting enough to see the results. A great way to get the DHA you need to protect your brain, heart, and body is a daily krill oil supplement as it is more bioavailable than basic fish oil supplements.

Multiple Benefits For Omega-3s

omega_3_sources

According to two studies recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids may have anti-inflammation and cancer prevention benefits, as well proving beneficial for the heart.

In the first study performed at the Jilin University of China, tests showed that omega-3 supplements reduced the occurrence of a potentially damaging molecule called “sICAM-1” or “soluble intercellular adhesion molecule.” Reducing the amount of this element that circulates within your body can decrease your risk of atherosclerosis and other conditions that break down your cells.

Even more interesting was the evidence found in the second study. In this study from the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in Paris, it was found that supplementing your diet with omega-3 is a good idea when you want to fight back against the cancer-promoting qualities of “sICAM-1.”

The second study examined 408 cancer-stricken individuals and compared their stats against a control group of 760 healthy individuals. There was clearly a correlation between omega-3 levels and sICAM levels. Remarkably, there was no association between cancer and subjects with a higher intake of omega 3.

Researchers state that there are two primary ways that omega-3s might fight back against the risk of cancer. The first is by reducing the ability for adhesion molecules like sICAM-1 to express itself. The second is by disrupting the actual cancer-promoting pathway that ICAM stimulates.
